Sonomo Scent Studio scents of the day

I don't know what it is about Sonoma Scent Studio's perfumes, but so many of them seem to be ideal to wear on a cool, slightly misty, melancholy autumn day.

Today I wore Winter Woods and Wood Violet. While I could also see Wood Violet being good for a cool spring day, when one might expect to encounter violets in nature, there is something wistful about the smell of violets (at least to me) that seems suited to the decaying season of autumn. Winter Woods is warmer in feel than Wood Violet, but both fragrances seem like they belong naturally to the in-between seasons.

One thing I've noticed about a number of Sonoma Scent Studio perfumes is that they contain a lot of labdanum. The perfume company's website goes on to say that 'Labdanum is a thick, resinous substance with a sweet, earthy, musky, woodsy aroma'. No surprise then, that I associate a number of the house's perfumes with nature, woods, autumn, or even a damp spring.

  1. I have read so much about the SSS scents that I am tempted to get in there and try some in my never ending quest for the perfect wood fragrance (I know that it doesn't exist as my idea of perfect changes each day)

I like the idea of Wood Violet (long time fan of Grey Flannel here), and Forest Walk & Winter Woods seem right up my street (ferny path??), so I guess the only thing to do is get the samples.

(Like I need any more fragrance). Apropos of nothing, today's non autumnal frag is SJP Covet layered with Cabochard - distinctly not run of the mill.

  2. Oh just realised "up my ferny path" doesn't sound quite the way I intended it.....

  3. Nick, thanks for commenting. Sampling SSS is a very reasonable thing to do. They are affordable and very good value for money. Give it a go! Covet layered with Cabochard - that is interesting, to say the least!

    1. Well Covet is one of my great discoveries. I love it by itself, but it is also such a good deep green & rich note that it can be layered with so many other things. It is perfect with O de Lancome, Encre Noir, Absinthe by Lacroix (Avon), Ocean Wet Wood, Paestum Rose, Voleurs de Rose, oh just about anything really.

Along with Dzongkha & Encre Noir, Covet is one of those frags I probably couldn't do with out.

  4. Ohhh. Thanks for the mention of labdanum. I've tried three different SSS scents and all three of them had a challenging note that I wanted to get past, but that so far I've failed to. It sounds like it's the labdanum, and that either I need to learn to love it (I can see it happening) or this house may not be for me.

    1. I tried Winter Woods, Forest Walk, and Jour Ensoleille. I like everything else about all of them, but I'm fighting that note...
